Padron
The padrón (empadronamiento) is the municipal registration that records who lives in a given town or city in Spain. You register by attending an appointment at your local city hall, listing your official address at a place you rent (typically for 6+ months) or own. Registering on the padrón does not grant any legal residency status, but it serves as proof of habitual address for a wide range of everyday and bureaucratic purposes — enrolling kids in public school, accessing the public healthcare system, registering a vehicle, applying for a residency card, voting in municipal elections (for EU citizens), and supporting visa renewal or arraigo applications. Completing this process and obtaining the certificate as proof is a key first step for new arrivals to Spain — both EU and non-EU — in seeking legal residency in the country.
TIE card
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical residency card issued to non-EU foreigners living in Spain for more than six months, and it serves as your official proof of legal residency status. This is different from a NIE, which is simply a foreigner identification number. The confusion between the two often comes down to the fact that your NIE number is printed on the TIE card itself, which leads people to mix up which one they actually have or need. A TIE card must be applied for shortly after arriving in Spain, and later renewed to maintain residency status.
